Rainbow Road

The Rainbow Road really has to be done to fully appreciate the great scenery as the photos below simply don't do it justice. It is 100km of well maintained gravel / 4X4 track with small stream crossings as it winds through stunning valleys, for those adventure riding the South Island this one is a must. An ideal route addition to the Rainbow Road is the Molesworth Road which when combined supplies 260km of great New Zealand scenery.

To help with road name confusion, the term Rainbow Road is the name of this particular route, not the actual road name itself. Starting from the the back of Hanmer and travelling north the name of the road you will be travelling is Tophouse Road which then turns into Wairau-Hanmer Springs Hydro Road when you hit Lake Tennyson.
